Table Stakes

High above the City at Tower 42 in London, the Boardroom Club convened Table Stakes, a focused problem-solving session for CFOs and senior finance leaders.

The session set out with a clear objective: to examine a single, high‑stakes challenge in depth and surface multiple, practical approaches. The question at the centre of the discussion was a familiar one: how to make decisions with confidence today, without compromising resilience tomorrow.

Striking that balance remains a defining challenge for finance leaders. Short-term pressures demand action, yet over‑indexing on long-term scenarios can slow or prevent decision-making altogether. The discussion explored how organisations can avoid this paralysis while retaining discipline in their approach.

What became clear was the importance of clarity at the top. Strong direction provides the framework within which effective decisions can be made. Without it, even routine choices risk becoming unnecessarily complex.

There was also broad agreement on the role of data in strengthening decision-making. Advances in artificial intelligence are accelerating access to insight, but the discussion highlighted a critical distinction. The advantage lies not simply in gathering more data, but in knowing when sufficient insight has been reached and action is required.

These are the conversations that shape practical decision-making. In environments where the stakes are high, clarity, discipline and timing remain decisive.
